JSSGS was established in June 2002 through the efforts of a preparatory committee set up by seven female researchers. The aim of JSSGS is to promote gender equity in sport and create gender-free sport through research. JSSGS's activities include organizing an annual general conference, workshops, and publishing the Journal of Sport and Gender Studies. The current membership of the organization is 120. The 2004 conference program was as follows: Lecture "Raising The Question As To The Relationship Between Male Coaches And Female Athletes", Symposium " From the Viewpoint of the Physical Education Teacher, the Journalist, and the Athlete: How Long Will Gender Blindness In The World Of Sport Go On?". There were also several general presentations and workshops. In addition, JSSGS jointly held an international meeting with another society where Professor Kari Fasting gave a lecture on "Gender Mainstreaming And Sport" in October 2004. It is evident that JSSGS is now highly expected to lead research of gender studies for physical education and sport in Japan, and try to change the gender-politics in the sport world. http://www.jssgs.org

Recently gender equality in sport and physical education has improved in Japan. For example, the number of female participants in life-time sport has increased and ender-equal curriculum in physical education has developed. Female athletes have advanced in almost every kind of sport and have made remarkable progress in standing. There are, however, many questions remaining as to whether these trends can really show the advance of gender equality in sport and physical education. Two of which are "When women advance in sport that has developed surround men, is it just meeting male standards?" "Why do men still dominate in the leadership of sport even now?". To answer these questions, it is essential to understand the gender structure of sport and physical education through research, and to spread the knowledge gained from the results. The Japan society for sport and gender studies which was established in 2002 has been accumulating the results of research and has been informing the general public; by publishing the data on women and sport, and a book on the basics of sport and gender studies; by translating excellent foreign publications; by printing an academic journal; by using our web-site for information and discussion. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce the contents and results of our activities from the viewpoint of informing research results and promoting knowledge.
